2020 Chainsaw Carving Championship - Thursday
by Maggie Craig
September 19, 2020

The fourth annual Kootenai Country Montana International Chainsaw Carving Championship, sponsored by Kootenai Country Montana, was held over the weekend of September 10-13. The Thursday through Sunday event again transformed the end of Mineral Avenue into a profusion of sights and sounds with master carvers producing unbelievable works of art.

As with other events held in Libby during the Covid-19 pandemic, the organizers were responsible for producing a plan that would theoretically keep the public and carvers safe. In practice, mask wearing by some was the only evidence of deference to the pandemic. Besides Covid concerns, thick smoke from west coast and Callahan Creek wildfires moved in Saturday afternoon, further complicating respiratory issues. The smoke was in full force for Sunday's carving conclusion, staying in the hazardous category for the entire day. Sunday's smoke was reminiscent of the 2017 inaugural event when the local West Fork fire filled our skies with smoke.

In spite of the challenges, organizers were again able to produce a top-notch event, bringing 18 of the best carvers from around the country and even the world to Libby for this incomparable exhibition of chainsaw art.

This was the first of four days of amazing artistic talent on display on Mineral Avenue.
