The Libby Dam Visitor Center is hosting a biologist from Birds of Prey NW along with several diverse birds to celebrate International Migratory Bird Day and National Kids to Parks Day on Saturday, May 14. This is a free program. Between 9 a.m. and Noon, visitors may view the birds up close and speak with the handlers individually.

There will be educational presentations by the handlers with the birds periodically throughout the morning. There will also be kid-friendly activities throughout the Visitor Center and more! Bring your binoculars and watch the nesting osprey and eagles downstream of the dam and look for Bighorn Sheep in the hills above.

The visiting raptors are under the care of biologist Janie Veltkamp, of the nonprofit Birds of Prey NW. Janie has studied and worked with birds of prey for twenty years, nursing injured birds back to health. She has also been instrumental in helping re-establish viable populations of endangered raptors such as ospreys and peregrine falcons.

Most recently, Janie and "Beauty," a bald eagle missing half her beak, were featured in a National Geographic special on TV. Birds of Prey Northwest travels with live birds as "animal ambassadors" to help educate the public and raise awareness of the issues facing wildlife today. www.bopnw.org

Libby Dam Visitor Center is located at 260 Souse Gulch Road, approximately 17 miles north of Libby, Montana.

Kim Annis with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will also be there with Bear Aware (and a stuffed bear). The Lincoln Conservation District will also be on hand with info on stream permits and youth programs and also folks from the Lincoln County Animal Shelter.
