Merriam's Turkeys
November 23, 2012

While wild turkeys are not native to Montana, the Merriam's
turkey has become a successful transplant to our state. The
original birds were transplanted from Colorado in 1954,
according to the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and
Parks web site.

Male turkeys have tufts of feathers, called beards, that grow
from their chest. This is one of the distinguishing
characteristics of the male turkey, although rarely a hen may
also be seen with a short beard.
