FWP investigation concludes self defense in Libby grizzly incident
by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks
December 21, 2011

FWP has concluded an investigation into a reported self defense shooting of a grizzly bear in Pipe Creek north of Libby in November. FWP Warden Phil Kilbreath investigated the incident. Kilbreath’s investigation determined the following:

--The bear was a collared male grizzly;

--The individual encountered the bear when walking from his vehicle to his house at night after returning from a hunting trip earlier in the day;

--He shot at the bear from the hip at approximately 10 yards, killing it.

FWP has concluded that this was a justified self defense shooting.
