December events at the Troy Library
by Sarah Daviau, Lincoln County Libraries
December 4, 2011

The Troy Branch of the Lincoln County Public Libraries will be presenting a full calendar of programs during the month of December. All events are free and open to the public.

The Troy Library will be closed on Friday, December 23 and Saturday, December 24 for Christmas.

The Troy Library will be closed to the public on Saturday, December 31 for New Year’s Eve.

On Thursday, December 8 at 5:30 pm, librarians will give a demonstration of how to find state and federal tax forms on the Internet. Laptops will be provided for hands-on practice.

In December, the Troy Writers’ Group will have two meetings, the first on Wednesday, December 7 at 5:30 pm and the second on Wednesday, December 14 at 5:30 pm. Both meetings will be held at the Troy Library. The group welcomes writers of all ages, but please be advised that the group will not censor anything. New members are welcome and should contact Stacy at the Troy Library, 295-4040, for more information and to pick up copies of the stories being discussed.

The Troy Friends of the Library will meet on Wednesday, December 14 at 1 pm. All are welcome.

The Troy Library’s Book Discussion Group will meet on Thursday, December 15 at 5 pm. This month, the group will discuss novel Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. In the story, a boy named Daniel selects a novel from a library of rare books, enjoying it so much that he searches for the rest of the author's works, only to discover that someone is destroying every book the author has ever written. Before Daniel knows it, his seemingly innocent quest to find the author’s books has opened a door into one of Barcelona's darkest secrets, an epic story of murder, magic, madness and doomed love. Books are available at the library for 14-day checkout.

On Friday, December 16 at 6 pm, the Troy Library will be show the 1993 stop-motion film The Nightmare Before Christmas (Rated PG, 76 minutes). Jack Skellington, the King of Halloween, is bored with the same routine every year. When he discovers Christmastown, he suggests doing Christmas this year instead. But things do not go as planned when Oogie Boogie, an evil gambling boogey man, plots to play a game with Santa Claus' life and creates a nightmare for all the good little boys and girls everywhere.

The last Friday of every month is Amnesty Day at the Lincoln County Libraries. This month Amnesty Day is Friday, December 30. Any materials less than 90 days overdue which are returned in good condition to any of the three libraries on that day will have all penalties waived. Overdue interlibrary loan materials are not included.

For more upcoming library events, please view the calendar on the Lincoln County Public Libraries website, www.lincolncountylibraries.com.
