November events at the Lincoln County Libraries
November 2, 2011

A big November is planned at the Lincoln County libraries. This month is the kick-off of their five-part Civil War series of programs at the Libby Library. This program series, entitled Let’s Talk About It: Making Sense of the American Civil War, has been made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association. They are one of only 65 libraries nationwide to receive the grant. They will have two presentations, a movie, and a discussion planned in November in honor of the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. There will be Civil War related programs running through March 2012.

In addition to all of the history, they have computer classes, after-school programs, story times, and more in all three libraries. To find out dates and times, check out the libraries’ calendar (www.lincolncountylibraries.com/calendar.php), call the libraries in Libby (406-293-2778), Troy (406-295-4040), and Eureka (406-296-2613.

The Civil War series continues on Tuesday, November 15 at 5 pm with a screening of the classic film The Red Badge of Courage (1951, 69 minutes). Based on Stephen Crane’s novel of the same name, Audie Murphy (the most honored soldier in World War II) gives a brilliant performance as the young Civil War soldier coming to grips with the horrors of war.

Rich Aarstad of the Montana Historical Society will visit the Libby Library on Tuesday, November 22 at 6 pm to give a presentation on Montana during the Civil War. The presentation will cover how Montana, then part of the Idaho Territory, was influential in the course of the war and how the war influenced the formation of Montana as a separate territory. Mr. Aarstad will also discuss how the Civil War played a part in the lives of Montanans, even though they lived so far from the front lines.

The first discussion session of the Making Sense of the American Civil War series will be held on Tuesday, November 29 at 6 pm at the Libby Library. The theme for the first discussion is "Imagining War."

Attendees are encouraged to read Geraldine Brooks’ Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "March" and pick up other program-related materials prior to the discussion. As the North reels under a series of unexpected defeats during the dark first year of the war, one man leaves behind his family to aid the Union cause. His experiences will utterly change his marriage and challenge his most ardently held beliefs. Copies of the book and other materials are available for check-out at the Libby Library. For more information on the program series, please call 406-293-2778.

The Libby Library presents Family Movies @ Your Library on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. These events begin at noon. On Saturday, November 12 the library will show the Disney animated film "Oliver & Company" (G, 74 minutes). Inspired by Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist", Oliver is a kitten left to fend for himself on the streets of New York until he meets Dodger, a cocky terrier mix who introduces him to his friendly pack of ruff 'n' ready canine pickpockets. Come to the library on Saturday, November 26 to celebrate author Louisa May Alcott’s birthday with a screening of the 1994 film "Little Women" (115 minutes, PG) starring Winona Ryder, Christian Bale, and Susan Sarandon. Based on the 1868 novel, "Little Women" tells the story of the trials and tribulations of four sisters living in New England during the Civil War.

The last Friday of every month is Amnesty Day at the Lincoln County Libraries. Because the library will closed on November 25, this month Amnesty Day is Friday, November 18. Any materials less than 90 days overdue which are returned in good condition to any of the three libraries on that day will have all penalties waived. Overdue interlibrary loan materials are not included.
