Heritage Museum annual opening celebration June 5th
by The Heritage Museum
June 2, 2010

Saturday, June 5th, The Heritage Museum will host its annual opening celebration from 10-5. Presentations and demonstrations are scheduled and there will be learning experiences, food, fun and games for the whole family!

Birds, birds, birds! The museum recently received almost 50 birds, most of which are now on exhibit in the Natural History section of the museum. You’ll want to spend some time looking at the variety of species. Be sure to look up, so you don’t miss any!

Antique quilts, most from the Inez Herrig collection, will be displayed for the entire summer. Many were made in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s.

In the Beebe Room at 10:00, Loretta Stevens, Kootenai Tribal Liaison for the Kootenai National Forest will demonstrate the Salish & Kootenai Tribal Traditional Crafts Trunk.

Students from Craig Rowan’s Indian Education and Patty Rambo’s art classes will be playing and teaching traditional Native American games. These games have been researched, restored and reintroduced by the International Traditional Games Society. Ms. Rambo is a certified trainer of the Society. Games such as Ring the Stick, Doubleball and Stone People are planned. These games are fun and teach the life skills that were (and are still) necessary for the survival of the native culture…physical, mental and spiritual. Come join in the games from 10:30–1:00!

From 11:00 –1:00 "Beyond Help" (Lee Tonner, Mike Powell & Ann Mason) will provide musical entertainment on the grass in front of the cookhouse. You can grab some lunch in the cookhouse and eat inside or bring it outside to enjoy while listening to music. Jeff Gruber will be head cook with burgers, German sausages, coleslaw, pies and cakes on the menu.

At 2:00 come to the Beebe Room and discover all about bears from Kim Annis of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. She will bring a grizzly and a black bear full-size mount that you can see up close and touch. Learn the differences and more about these impressive creatures.

At 3:30 we’ll show some logging film from the 1930’s-1950’s followed by "Pine, People & Deer," a 1955 film produced by the J. Neils Lumber Company to educate the viewer on the damage the large deer population was having on Ponderosa Pine regeneration.

Of course, there will be exhibits and demonstrations going on throughout the day. Machinery, such as the rock crusher powered by Leo Schmauch’s 1928 tractor, will be operating in the yard. The Model T will be cruising through the grounds.

Try panning for gold in front of the Miner’s Cabin!

The Kootenai Muzzleloaders will set up camp and show their skills and handmade crafts. Weather permitting, Mark Morain will be demonstrating 18th and early 19th century gun-building. Also there will be Mike Cohan and others with an 1839 U.S. Army Corp Topographical Engineers exhibit.

The entire month of June, the Libby Fine Arts group will display their artwork in the Tower Gallery. Some art is available for sale. This is a changing exhibit throughout the summer. Quilts will fill the gallery in July and photographs in August.

The Heritage Museum will be open through August 31st, Monday-Saturday, 10:00-5:00 and Sunday, 1:00-5:00. Admission is by donation. The Heritage Museum is run completely by volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please call Eileen Carney at 406-293-6407.

The Heritage Museum is located at 34067 U.S. Highway 2 in Libby.
