Public meeting on Scotchman Mine cleanup March 2
To stabilize leaking waste dump site at old mine
March 1, 2010

The Kootenai National Forest will be hosting a public meeting on the cleanup of the Scotchman Mine site on Tuesday, March 2nd at the Heron Community Center from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

The Scotchman Mine is located approximately five miles north of Heron in the East Fork of Blue Creek on the Kootenai National Forest. It last operated from 1966 to 1970 to mine silver, lead and zinc. Contaminated water from the mine’s waste dump is leaking into Blue Creek.

The Kootenai National Forest has worked with a private contractor to develop a draft work plan to access the mine waste dump site and move material to a stable location away from the creek in order to protect soil and water resources. The clean-up work is expected to take place in August when water levels are the lowest.

For more information, contact Gary Kedish, Doug Grupenhoff or Lee Kramer at the Cabinet Ranger District, Kootenai National Forest, 406-827-3533.
