Kehn honored as Kootenai Quilt Guild’s 2010 Quilter of the Year

Deanna Kehn of Libby has been named the Kootenai Valley Quilt Guild’s 2010 Quilter of the Year.
Kehn, who moved to Libby in 2004 and joined the quilt guild the following year, has been quilting since she was in high school. Quilting was a family tradition.
"My mother was a quilter, and in fact her mother and all of her sisters were quilters," she said.
Kehn sews all of her quilts by hand, and she believes that quilts are made to be used. She has several at home that she uses on a rotating basis, and she’s made some denim quilts that are perfect for rough and ready service at football games and other events.
"It’s to use, to really use," she said of her denim quilts. "In fact, all of the quilts I make, I expect them to use. They’re not to stick in the closet, because I can always make another one – that’s what I tell them."
Kehn said she’s made all seven of her grandchildren a quilt for a graduation present.
Kehn’s work will be featured at the annual Nordicfest quilt show in September. She’s currently working on a special quilt for Nordicfest that combines Japanese-themed fabric with the Italian trapunto technique, which produces a raised surface.
In addition to quilting, Kehn is skilled at crocheting, knitting and Hardanger embroidery. She and her husband, Kenneth, enjoy square dancing together, and she volunteers her time at the Libby Care Center and currently serves as the quilt guild’s vice president.
