St. John’s Community Services builds Garden

St. John’s Lutheran Hospital Community Services Building is now brighter and more cheerful thanks to the help of many area businesses and community members.
"The ‘Peaceful Garden’, which follows the south wall of the SJLH Community Services building, was definitely a group project. The building crew that worked on the new ambulance barn in the summer of 2008 graciously donated leftover brick from the project to help erect raised flowerbeds. Students from Libby High School volunteered evening hours to join a work party made up of Community Services staff and volunteers, as well as the SJLH Plant Operations crew. A local nursery, which wishes to remain anonymous, also donated many orphaned shrubs to the project. Garden enthusiasts from our departments have contributed starts from a variety of perennial plants and shrubs, as well as purchasing some colorful annuals to brighten any bare spots," stated Laura Sedler, St. John’s Lutheran Hospital Social Worker. "To top all that off, the SJLH Hospice Volunteers take care of all of the weeding, pruning, and watering."
The garden has provided a serene place for staff members, patients, and visitors at St. John’s to enjoy their breaks, lunches, and informal meetings in an outdoor setting. "Visitors to our services often comment about our lovely garden. It’s a nice, quiet spot to regroup and revitalize yourself after a trying day. Our only rule is that you pull a weed or two after you enjoy the solitude!" stated Becky Brundin, Nutritional Services and Diabetes Manager at SJLH.
"It has been fun working together to make this garden a reality. It’s a pleasure to arrive at work in the morning and be greeted by all that color; it was very exciting to see how well our efforts had been rewarded this spring after the long winter," added Sedler.
