Lady Loggers win state softball championship

The Lady Loggers are the Montana Class A state softball champs.

Libby went undefeated through the state tournament at Butte, downing Frenchtown, Belgrade and Corvallis over the course of the first two days before besting Frenchtown again in the championship game.

Libby beat Frenchtown 7-6 to open the tournament in the second round on Thursday. The game was scoreless until Frenchtown put the first run on the board in the top of the fifth and then added five more in the sixth to take a 6-0 lead.

Libby scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the seventh to take the win.

Shelby Barton, Nickole Lapka and Laice Dedrick had two hits apiece, and Megan Wedel added one more. Lapka, Dedrick, Alysha Martin and Holly Cirian collected RBIs, and Brooke Hageness got the win from the mound.

The Lady Loggers pounded Belgrade 13-3 on Friday in a game that was stopped after six innings under the 10-run rule.

Hageness again got the win while batting 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Dedrick also doubled and picked up an RBI. Kimi Klin was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Lapka was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Wedel was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Martin had one hit and two RBIs, and Jordan Refsland had one hit and one RBI.

Libby beat Corvallis 3-0 in Friday’s undefeated game. The Lady Loggers scored two runs in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth.

Klin batted 2-for-3, Dedrick was 1-for-3 with a double and Cirian was 1-for-3. Hageness was again the winning pitcher.

Libby blasted Frenchtown 15-8 in Saturday’s title game. The Lady Loggers trailed 4-3 after the first inning and led 6-5 after two. Frenchtown put three runs on the board in the top of the fourth to lead 8-5, but after that it was all Libby.

The Lady Loggers scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth. The inning included a two-run homer by Cirian that tied the game. The Lady Loggers added two runs in the fifth inning and another pair in the sixth.

Cirian was 4-for-4. Lapka went 3-for-4 with a triple, a double and five RBIs. Hageness was the winning pitcher and batted 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Dedrick was 4-for-5 with three RBIs, Refsland was 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Barton and Klin added one hit each.

Libby ended the season 22-4 overall.
