Pipe Creek Road to receive improvements
Currently planned for 2012
October 31, 2007

A major section of the Pipe Creek Road will be getting a face lift. But not until 2012.

The section will be from Bobtail to the Turner Mountain Road. The estimated cost is between $13.5 and $14.1 million.

Problems identified with the road include a need to improve curves for safety and decrease accidents, and minimize threats to endangered species, namely the grizzly. The road is now 15 to 26 feet wide creating safety issues.

The Montana Department of Transportation developed six options from option one, total reconstruction to option six, a pretty bare bones fix.

The recommendation is for option six. It will include a 3 and one-half inch asphalt overlay on the existing road, 22 to 24 foot wide top with realignment of the centerline for safety, more signage, improved wider striping, guardrails, and some flattening. This approach will maintain the road’s character as a “mountain highway.”
