Plan for changing weather when traveling this winter
October 31, 2006

Winter brings wonderful recreational opportunities, but outdoor recreationists need to also be alert for changing weather and hazardous road conditions in their travel plans.

Road Conditions Use caution when traveling under winter road conditions. Be alert for black ice and slippery conditions, especially on bridges. Check the online or phone call lines to get up-to-date reports on road conditions. Travel reports for Montana area online at: http://www.mdt.mt.gov/travinfo/. Road condition information and construction delays may also be accessed for Montana by calling 511 or 1-800-226-7623.

Wildlife It’s hard to see a black moose on the road on a dark night. Drive cautiously at night and be alert for deer, moose and even cattle on the road. Don’t overdrive your headlights and give yourself plenty of stopping distance in the event wildlife jumps out unexpectedly in front of you.

Safety Make sure someone knows where you are going and when you will
return. Be prepared for changing weather. Keep extra warm clothing in your vehicle (coats, hats, gloves), along with emergency blankets, food and equipment. If you don’t yet have a cell phone, they come in very handy in emergencies if you are stranded out on a rural road far from help.
