35th Annual Ride & Tie World Championship
First Race in Montana to be Held in Libby
by Maggie Craig
July 8, 2005

Two people and a horse comprise a team for Ride & Tie competitions. All three must complete a cross-country course usually ranging between 35 and 45 miles. In Saturday’s race in Libby, it will be a 35-mile course. The two human teammates alternate riding and running, leapfrogging each other back and forth along the course. It is a grueling endurance race for all concerned. The three must negotiate every manner of terrain, weather, problems and competition that comes their way. The race is about training, teamwork, strategy, endurance, determination, and ultimately, it is about finishing. Of course, the fastest team wins, but “To finish is to win” applies to Ride & Tie competitions.

In 35 years of World Championships, the race has never been held in Montana. This year’s event is being held in Libby. Most of the past championship races have been held in California, although Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, and Utah have also hosted the event. Libby’s selection to host the event is a testament to what Libby has to offer. Every World Championship site is studied carefully to design a racecourse that can be won in about four hours. Altitude, elevation gain, and terrain all factor into a site’s appropriateness for the event. The local race site director is Mary Beth Alkire, and she describes Libby’s course as challenging. By Saturday evening, the Championship will be decided. Good luck to all.
