Koocanusa Resort and Marina held their 3rd annual Trout and Salmon Fishing Derby on Lake Koocanusa over the weekend of May 14-15. Over 270 contestants signed up for derby, ranging in age from 2-85 years of age. According to the Resort, this was one of the best derbies ever.
First Place winner for Heaviest Trout went to Ron Anderson of Libby with an 11 pound fish. First Place for the Combined Trout Class went to John Poterfield of Whitefish, Montana, for his 20.5 winner. Niki Jacobson, of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, took first place with a 4.1 pound salmon.
Participants came from Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, California, Colorado and Utah. The annual derby is held each year in May, sponsored by Koocanusa Resort and Marina, which is located right on the lake just a few miles up from Libby Dam.
According to Koocanusa Resort Randi, "This was one of the best derbies ever. We are very excited about the growth of the derby this year and are looking forward to now starting to organize everything for next year."
Contestants enjoyed calm weather the morning of the first day, then the rain came, but that didn't deter spirits. By the time they got everyone out of the water on Sunday for weigh-in, BBQ & door prizes and the awards ceremony was over, it was pouring down rain.
According to Randi, "We had contestants from all over the western US. There were 151 from Montana, 68 from Idaho, 45 from Washington, 1 from Oregon, 1 from Nevada, 4 from California, 1 from Colorado and 1 from Utah. This was 99 person increase from the derby of 2004 where we had 173 contestants and 5 different states."
